Bruce Coughlan: Songsmith

I first started writing songs when I was twelve. I’ve written hundreds of songs in my life. I’ve spent the past 35 years making my living as a singer of songs, and I’ve sung literally thousands of songs in all different styles. I know all about songs.

I could list all the workshops and song circles, the songwriting contests, the great musicians I’ve worked with, the fabulous producers and the cool projects I’ve been involved with over the years, but what it all really boils down to is a question of values.

• Telling an interesting and memorable story in under four minutes is the goal of every songwriter.

• Writing songs of endearing (and enduring) quality requires part craft, part science, and part intuition.

• A good song should transport the listener, distract them from the mundane and entertain them
A well-crafted song can soliciting an emotional response.

• Music should set the scene, create the mood, and support the storyline. Music should progress, as the story progresses.

• Creating a balance of tension and release (yin and yang) is the hallmark of a well-written song.

• Songs that strike a common chord are the trademark of exceptional songwriters.

• In almost every case, a song should possess a simple, memorable hook line so everyone can sing along.

These are values that I bring to each creative occasion, whether it’s a commissioned work, studio session or an album project. If you share these values, and require assistance attaining your creative goals, you might consider enlisting the help of a songsmith. That’s me.
